Thanksgiving Devotions for Kids: Simple Lessons + Hands-On Activities
As we gather for Thanksgiving and count our blessings as a family, it’s the perfect time to turn our hearts toward God as the Giver of every good thing. Today, we’re sharing these devotions and activities to help your family create meaningful moments with God and each other.
Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!
1. Our Memories Matter
Family Fun
Sit in a circle for a memory game. Say, “God loves me and gave me…,” and name a blessing beginning with the letter A. Have the next person repeat that blessing, and add another beginning with B. Continue on, adding to the list of God’s gifts to your family.
Bible Time
“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.” You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples. (Psalm 77:11-12, 14)

Are you afraid you’ll go hungry tomorrow? No, because you’ve had food each day of the year. Do you worry the sun won’t come up in the morning? No, it’s risen in the sky from the beginning of time. Do you knock and introduce yourself when you arrive at home? No, because you remember who loves you and where you belong.
God knows we need to remember him too. Fear and trouble come out of nowhere and we don’t know what to do. In those times, the Bible says to remember. Remember God’s power. Remember his love. Remember the way he answered prayers and stayed by our side. When we remember God’s faithfulness in the past, we find peace for today and courage to face the future.
Can you remember how God took care of our family? How he guided our steps? Forgave our sins? Provided what we needed? Healed and helped us, over and over? When we’re sad or afraid, let’s remember God and trust him. “…for [the Lord’s] compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)
Lord,
Thank you for taking care of us every day. May we never forget your power, love, and blessings in our lives.
Amen.
2. Living in the Light
Family Fun
Hide a game or a treat for the kids. Turn off the lights and let them search for the hidden item in the dark. After a few minutes, use a flashlight to lead them to the hiding place. Play the game or enjoy the treat together.
Bible Time
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. (Psalm 119:105)
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

A GPS can navigate the route to new places. Its illuminated screen provides step-by-step instructions to reach your destination. By its guidance, you can travel with confidence you’ll get where you need to go.
God knows we need help on our journey through life as well. Tough questions and problems make us feel we’re walking in darkness. We wonder, How can I make good friends? Should I join a club or a team? Which career is right for me? How can I feel brave? What if I make a big mistake? How do I handle temptation? Who can I trust? What does it mean to follow Jesus? Questions and struggles can stop us in our tracks.
God gave his Word to help us find our way through life. Its wisdom shows us what to do. It calms our fears and gives courage to do what’s right. The Bible is like a light shining on our path so we can walk without stumbling. If we live by the Word, we can follow God wherever he leads.
Lord,
Thank you for the gift of your Word. Let us trust in Jesus as our light, our guide, and our help every step of the way.
Amen.
3. Filled to the Brim
Family Fun
Divide into two teams. Place two bowls of dry cereal at one end of the table and two empty bowls at the other. Holding plastic spoons in your mouths, have a relay race to scoop up the cereal and transfer it to the empty bowls. The team who fills their empty bowl first is the winner.
Bible Time
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3)

An empty drawer can hold plenty of clean, new clothes. Our loved ones can be seated in the vacant chairs around the table for a meal. An empty box can be filled with a gift, wrapped, and given away as a blessing. A blank notebook of paper is ready for an exciting story to be written on its pages. Sometimes, what’s most empty can receive the best of all.
God knows our hearts are empty, too. Every person tries to fill up their heart in this world. Some try money and success as their ticket to happiness. Others believe friends and loved ones will keep heartache away. Helping the poor and following the rules might make you feel like a good person. Yet no matter how we try, we can’t find the peace and joy our spirits are longing for.
If we’re humble, we’ll see how far we fall short of God’s glory. (Romans 3:23) We need forgiveness for our sins. Apart from God, we can’t do anything. (John 15:5) If we bring our empty hearts to God, he will fill them up. We’ll receive the spiritual riches of mercy, salvation, and love. “The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the Lord will praise him—may your hearts live forever!” (Psalm 22:26)
Lord,
We are poor in spirit without you. Thank you for filling us with your love.
Amen.
4. Let’s Celebrate!
Family Fun
Line up eight water glasses in a row. Add water to the glasses, filling them with increasing amounts as you go down the line. Tap the glasses with a plastic spoon or a chopstick to play musical notes. Can you play a worship song on the glasses?
Bible Time
“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)
Learning Together
Singing and celebrating go hand in hand. When you turn a year older, we sing “Happy birthday to you!” Christmas carols play nonstop during the holidays. Graduates march to “Pomp and Circumstance” to receive their diploma. A wedding is filled with music as the bride walks the aisle and the couple shares a dance as Mr. and Mrs. A party isn’t a party without music. Through singing, we rejoice in God’s blessings in our life.
Did you know God celebrates you and me when we believe in Jesus? “There is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (Luke 15:10) When we turn from unbelief to faith, from darkness to light, and from sin to obedience, God rejoices with singing.
God isn’t just celebrating our good choices. He’s rejoicing that we’ve “crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24) We’ve been adopted as his children. We’ll be together for all of eternity. Our sin brought pain and suffering, and our salvation brings joy and peace. Since God loves us, he rejoices with singing over the life we find in him.
Lord,
Thank you for the joy you put in our hearts! May our lives sing your praise as we love you always.
Amen.
5. The Gift of Family
Family Fun
As a family, stand in a circle facing one another. Reach your right arms toward the center and grab someone’s hand. Reach your left arms in and grab someone else’s hand. Work together to untangle your human knot without letting go of your grip.
Bible Time
Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. (Romans 12:16)
Learning Together
In our house, everyone is welcome in the circle. We reach out our hands to each other, and we never let go. Everyone has a voice to speak and be heard. We honor each other’s feelings and ideas. Your needs matter as much as my own. In a family, every member is equally special and important.
When we hold those values, our home is loving. We get along and live in peace. We treat each other with respect and kindness. It all goes wrong, though, when pride creeps into our hearts. Pride says, “Me first!” It demands attention and wants its way. Pride is rude, refusing to listen and interrupting what others have to say. Pride argues, insults, and makes others feel small. Pride thinks it’s too cool to honor younger kids, and too big to submit to adults. When pride comes in our door, harmony goes out.
We need humble hearts to have peace in our house. Let’s “do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above [ourselves], not looking to [our] own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3-4) If we love and serve with the humility of Jesus, we’ll find joy together.
Lord,
Thank you for creating our family. Guard our hearts from pride so we can stay close and loving like Jesus.
Amen.
