Episode 100: How to Support Your Adult Kids as a Grandparent—with The Teigen Family!
This is an exciting podcast for us since it’s our 100th episode! Wow! We are so grateful for every one of our guests who have joined us to encourage us in our faith and in loving our family well. We are also truly grateful for all of you who have tuned in, listened, and supported the ministry of the Growing Home Together podcast.
We have the honor of welcoming some of our favorite people to the show for this very special episode—our oldest son, Josh, with his wife, Cassie, and our oldest daughter, Emma, and her husband, Adonis. They’ve given us some of the greatest gifts of our lives, our grandbabies, and they’re here to help us accomplish three goals:
- We want to grow our empathy for young couples and parents in this season.
- We want to learn how to serve as a support system.
- And we want to gain some ideas for how to connect with our grandchildren as they grow.
Listen in as our family shares their wisdom and perspective on these topics and more. We hope you enjoy this special conversation! It was so fun!

Our Takeaways:
1) When you start a family, you’re confronted with your core identity. Whether you’re a new parent or a seasoned veteran, so much of yourself is wrapped up in taking care of your child. All of your priorities shift for a season. You’re operating off of too little sleep, and sometimes just getting a hot shower or cup of coffee is a challenge. In those moments, you question what truly makes you “you,” and what aspects of your life must be set aside for a time.
2) Our kids need grace for the time and space they need. Sometimes grandparents feel deprived of the time they’d like with their kids and grandkids. However, it’s important to recognize the challenges of raising young children and how many responsibilities young parents have to juggle. We can help ease the stress by offering our children grace and understanding rather than judgment.
3) Invest in your children’s marriage, not just their children. It’s easy to focus attention on spoiling and playing with your grandbabies, while completely forgetting about their mom and dad! Yet it’s important to realize that one of the best ways to care for our grandchildren is by investing in their parents. Grandparents can provide babysitting and practical help to lighten their kids’ load, all while affirming the strengths we see in their lives.
