10 Prayers for Parents: Asking God for Help and Hope as We Raise Our Kids
If we do the math, Rob and I have been parenting for 32 years. And we’ve got a ways to go since our youngest is still a teen. As we look back and reminisce, these three decades have held infant teething, toddler tantrums, and first-day-of-preschool tears.
We wedged our knees under the kids’ table while little ones sounded out “dog” and “cat” and discovered that two and two really do add up to four.
We’ve held stressed and weepy tweens coping with girl drama and the teacher who “hates me.”
Rob and I have cheered on young drivers while inwardly wishing that helmets were standard issue with learners’ permits.
We’ve walked alongside our children through first loves, first jobs, and first apartments. We’ve navigated the clingy years where our lap was their favorite chair, and the years of eye rolls and attitude as they raced toward independence.
Parenting has brought overwhelming joy, impossibly confusing questions, and the challenging inner work of placing our kids in God’s hands.
This is why, for us, prayer is everything. Prayer is the connection to the power, wisdom, and love of God that we need every single day. It’s through prayer that we find real help and a steady peace that holds in the storm.
You probably feel the gap, too, between your kids’ needs and your capacity to meet them. Our faithful and generous God stands ready to hear your prayers and meet you right where you are. May these ten prayers breathe hope and strength into your life with your children today.
1. A Prayer for Patience
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another… (Colossians 3:12-13)
Lord,
My child seems to take three steps forward and two steps back on their path to growing up. They make the same mistakes again and again. Common sense isn’t as common as I thought. One minute I feel we’re close and connected, and the next they close off and push me away.
The noise and messes and Mom, Mom, Mom! keep me in a constant state of sensory overload. Laundry piles high while groceries are always running low. Arguing, whining, and relentless questions make me want to plug my ears and lock myself in the bathroom for a moment of peace. My patience runs thin, leaving my kids with a parent on edge instead of a steady, gentle presence in their life.
I pray you will fill me with your patient and compassionate spirit today. Humble my heart so I’m quick to listen and slow to become irritable. Renew my perspective so I remember my children are inexperienced, immature, and learning a little more each day. May I bear with them as you bear with me—full of grace, mercy, and love.
Amen.
2. A Prayer for Endurance
May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had… (Romans 15:5)
Lord,
It’s absolutely true when they say that parenthood is a marathon and not a sprint. Yet so often, I find myself exhausted by the tasks and needs that never seem to end. Sleep suffers as I tend to little ones’ bad dreams and tummy aches and the worries that hijack my thoughts at 2:00 a.m. The daily work of helping and providing, cleaning and driving can feel more like a grind than a precious privilege as I raise my children.
It’s difficult, too, when my child is in a tough season. I wonder if they’ll conquer their fears. I worry their choices will go from bad to worse. They need my constant support, but it’s hard to stick close and hold on to hope when there’s no breakthrough in sight.
Build me up for the long haul, Lord. Knit an unshakeable endurance into my spirit so I bear with my children through thick and thin. Cultivate a faith that holds on to you, faithfully praying and trusting you are holding us to the end. Encourage my heart when I feel ready to quit, and breathe a fresh joy into my life with my kids.
Amen.
3. A Prayer for Laughter
But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful. (Psalm 68:3)
Lord,
Parenting in these times comes with a truckload of concerns and fears. After all, the cost of living is going through the roof. Online predators are preying on the vulnerable. Violence and sickness and war seem rampant.
And under my own roof, there’s always something broken that needs fixing. The bills keep landing in our inbox. Our calendar is packed. Homework and yard work never let up. And just when I think we’ve settled into a child’s age and stage, they take another leap forward and we lose our footing again.
I confess that my joy is too easily clouded by my circumstances. I count my losses instead of your blessings. And too often, I miss the fun and humor that are right there for the taking with my kids.
Put a smile on my face today, Lord. Fill me with praise for all the ways you’re good to our family. Let me delight in the sheer wonderfulness of my kids, in all their silly creativity. Make our house a home of gladness where we celebrate each other and the love of Christ each day. Be our joy and our song, always.
Amen.
4. A Prayer for Wisdom
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. (James 1:5)
Lord,
I wish that parenthood came with a map so I’d always know which direction to lead my family. I’m overwhelmed with questions about how my kids should be educated. Where we can cut expenses in our budget. What should take priority on our calendar. Which interests and talents to invest in for our kids. How to best worship as a family and foster our children’s faith. How to cultivate a close marriage when our kids need us 24/7.
It can feel like every decision carries impossible weight. I don’t want to hinder my kids from chasing their dreams and goals. I don’t want a misstep to jeopardize our financial security. I’m anxious to teach my children who Jesus really is. I don’t want to wake up years from now feeling like we’re strangers in our marriage. The pressure is on, and I’m afraid I’ll get it all wrong.
Yet you, Lord, promise your wisdom is there for the asking. Help me to run to you with my questions, doubts, and fears. Show me your will for our family day by day. Teach me once more that it’s you who holds us together in every detail. Keep me humble so I seek out wise counsel and depend on your Word for guidance. May I follow your lead and rest in your love.
Amen.
5. A Prayer for Courageous Hope
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1)
Lord,
My heart can feel overwhelmed by the unknowns of raising children. What if they fail in school and struggle to make their way in life? What if they fall into destructive relationships and kick their faith and values to the curb? What if they lose their health to sickness or injury? What if their innocence is stolen or they suffer trauma to their heart and mind? How can I hope for a bright future in a world that seems so dark?
By your Spirit, kindle a fresh faith in your powerful love that never lets us go. Fill me with confidence that your plans are good and will not fail. Remind me of all the ways you’ve answered prayers and cared for our needs in the past. Give me a joyful expectancy of all you’ve yet to accomplish in our lives.
Help me to trust you’re working for our good, even in difficult seasons. Use my children’s mistakes to teach them your better way. Let hardship cultivate a humble dependence on your love. May knowing you and living in you be the greatest desire of our hearts. If we put our hope in you, we are never disappointed.
Amen.
6. A Prayer for Protection
You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. (Psalm 32:7)
Lord,
I can feel powerless to protect my children from pain. I can’t be at school to deflect a bully’s mocking words. I can’t prevent every skinned knee, failed test, or fender-bender they might suffer. No matter how I cheer them on, I can’t keep doors of opportunity from slamming in their face. It hurts my heart to know that life will inevitably hold hard things that bring them low.
I also know that I can’t insulate myself from the troubles of this world. My health might fail. My bank account may dwindle to zero. Relationships can fracture. I’m fully dependent on you to keep us under your wing.
Be the powerful Protector of my family, shielding us from danger and harm. Provide for our daily needs. Guard against those who would damage our property, security, or reputation. Crush any schemes of the enemy to divide us against one another. Fill me with the bold confidence that comes from knowing you’re on our side. Thank you for our safety and the assurance that you hold us closely in your care.
Amen.
7. A Prayer for Encouragement
[The Lord] said, “I have loved you with a love that lasts forever. I have kept on loving you with a kindness that never fails. (Jeremiah 31:3)
Lord,
I mess up every day. My temper gets the best of me. I forget appointments and misplace my keys. I let my phone distract me from giving my kids the undivided attention they deserve. It’s easy to lose my perspective and allow small, temporary issues to loom large and steal my calm. The enemy whispers words of accusations in my ear, so I feel small. Ineffective. Less-than. I grow insecure that I’ll never be the parent my children truly need.
Encourage my heart today, Lord, by knowing our family was created by you. Help me to receive your grace that forgives my failings and offers the gift of a new day. Remind me of how far you’ve brought me and all you’ve helped me to learn—in you, I’ve been made new. Fill me with peace that can rest in your unconditional love that never lets me go.
Thank you for your constant work to build me up and keep me going. You keep every promise to renew, restore, and cherish me as your own. Be my joy and my light as I parent my children each day.
Amen.
8. A Prayer for Insight
O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! (Psalm 139:1, 6)
Lord,
I can’t pretend I have all the answers when it comes to helping, guiding, and understanding my child. I don’t know all the pressures they feel to succeed at school or get along with difficult people. I’m not aware of the fears that keep them up at night. When they make a mistake or bust through a boundary, it’s unclear what was driving their choices. It’s difficult for them to put their hopes and dreams, frustration and disappointment into words so I can fully connect with their heart.
Yet you, Lord, know my child through and through. No thought, desire, or emotion is hidden from your sight. I pray you will give me discernment to recognize my child’s true needs today. Show me what will motivate, inspire, and cultivate the best of who they are. Teach me how to address their weaknesses in ways that move them toward strength. Give me insight into what says “love” the most so they can feel valued, cherished, and important every day.
As you grow my child up, show me what it means to release them into your hands. Reveal how much freedom and responsibility they are ready to tackle. May I see and celebrate the unique and wonderful person you have created them to be.
Amen.
9. A Prayer for Gratitude
Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. (Colossians 2:7)
Lord,
Nobody said that parenthood was easy. Yet too often I find myself dwelling on how far my child has to go instead of how far they’ve come. I grow weary of spinning all the plates of our busy lives. I grow bored in the daily routines of laundry and dishes and driving that make each day seem the same as the next. My eyes grow blind to the wonder of my kids’ imagination. To the sweetness of their hugs. To the privilege it is to share this precious life you’ve created for our family.
Move me to praise, Lord, as I consider your goodness in my life. Open my eyes to see my loved ones as you do—as treasured image-bearers of their Creator. Remind me of all the prayers you’ve answered and the provision you’ve poured into our home. Let me see each act of service as an expression of love instead of a burden to carry.
Thank you for my family. Thank you for each day we are given to share with one another. Thank you for showing your love to me through the affection of my family. I am richly blessed.
Amen.
10. A Prayer for Peace
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27)
Lord,
Every mom and dad wants to know how the story ends for their child. Will they be happy and safe, capable and thriving? Will they know the love of friends and a family of their own? Will dreams come true? Will they be resilient in the face of difficulty? I confess that worry for tomorrow can steal my joy and peace in the now.
Restore my trust that you hold the future in your hands. Help me to believe your promise to use every hardship for our good as your children. Open my hands so I release my preferences and expectations and surrender to your perfect will. When my child seems to be moving backward on their road to maturity, give me deep-seated faith that you never stop pursuing my child’s heart.
And while my children are a priceless gift from your hand, may I never look to them as my source of well-being. Let me find my heart’s rest in you and you alone. Be my anchor that holds me secure through every storm. Keep me close in prayer, and reveal your faithful strength more and more through your Word. May I know you as the one who satisfies my soul. You are my light and my life.
Amen.
