7 Prayers for New Parents After the Baby Arrives
While December’s Christmas gifts have been unwrapped and put away, the BEST gift to our family is still on the way! Our son, Josh, and his beautiful wife, Cassie, are expecting their third little boy to enter the world at any moment. There is no joy like the birth of a child into our family! We can’t wait to meet our fourth grandchild pour our love into his life!
Yet while the birth of a baby is a precious time, it holds unique challenges for every new mama and daddy. The sleep deprivation drains away at your energy. The weight of anxiety over the baby’s health and changes to the family rhythm can feel too heavy to carry.
Now, more than ever, parents need prayer to move through the newborn season with peace and strength. We’ve compiled seven heartfelt prayers to put words to the hopes and concerns you may be carrying for your own little one or the new parents in your life.
Here are seven prayers to cover parents of new little ones as they adjust and care for these precious souls:
1) A Prayer for Peace
Whenever I am anxious and worried, you comfort me and make me glad. – Psalm 94:19
Lord,
Our child is a priceless gift from you. Yet while we feel overwhelmed with gratitude and love, we can struggle with anxiety for our little one’s health and well-being. We wonder how to raise a safe and secure child in this dangerous world. We’re unsure of how to parent as a team, and how to balance the needs of our baby with all the other demands on our attention. In moments of exhaustion, we feel afraid we’ll crumble under the pressure to meet every need. We need your peace to fill our spirits and carry us through.
Help us, Lord, to trust you with it all. Give reassurance that you’re with us every moment. Show us what it means to release our worries into your hands. Grow our faith in your promises to care for us in every detail. Fill us with confidence in you so we can simply rest in your love and cherish these days with our little one. Be our peace.
Amen.
2) A Prayer for Rest
He gives power to the tired and worn out, and strength to the weak. – Isaiah 40:29
Lord,
As we care for our little one throughout the day and night, our strength is fading fast. Interrupted sleep leaves us exhausted. It’s hard to think clearly. We’ve lost any sense of rhythm or routine.
It feels impossible to accomplish anything outside of feedings, diaper changes, and load after load of laundry. We are wearing down with fragile emotions and the daze of fatigue. We’re desperate for rest to restore our hearts, minds, and physical strength.
Thank you, Father, for your grace that offers gentle kindness and help in our weakest moments. Touch us with your healing hand so we can sleep deeply and be refreshed. Give us wisdom to exchange busy activity for quiet calm.
Send the support of extra hands who will lighten our load and create margin for rest. Soothe our little one so they can settle into a healthy, consistent rhythm of sleep. Be our hope and our strength as we hold on to you.
Amen.
3) A Prayer for a Closer Marriage
…then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. – Philippians 2:2
Lord,
The gift of parenthood is the most wonderful thing you’ve given us to share as a couple. Yet while our love for our child is a bond like no other, the stress and strain of this huge life change and the demands of caregiving can threaten to pull us apart. How can we find a sense of true oneness, teamwork, and support as we parent our little one side-by-side?
Fill us with tender, patient compassion for one another in this season. Keep us humble so we’re willing to listen with undivided attention, to serve generously, and to build each other up in every way we can. Show us how to capture moments to connect in meaningful ways. Help us to see one another as not just a co-parent, but as our partner, lover, and friend. As we walk this journey of parenthood together, may it draw us closer–to each other and to you–than ever before.
Amen.
4) A Prayer for God to Provide
He is good to everyone, and his compassion is intertwined with everything he does. You constantly satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing. – Psalm 145:9, 16
Lord,
While our arms and hearts are full as we hold our little one, we carry the worry of a depleted bank account as we pay for necessities each week. We worry about the shortfall of time to give our full attention to our loved ones. The lack of physical strength to work hard and keep our home running well.
We’re grateful for the gift of our child, but we can feel insecure in our ability to provide all that’s needed as they grow.
Restore a right perspective, Lord, that trusts in your loving power to provide for our family. Set us free from the pressure to be everything for our child. Keep us on our knees so we faithfully give our worries to you, knowing you care for us (1 Peter 5:7). Let us experience you as our faithful provider who gives what’s needed to cover expenses and remain secure. Guard our hearts from fear and worry as you grow a faith that is never shaken. Thank you for loving us as our generous Father.
Amen.
5) A Prayer for a Joyful Spirit
You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever. – Psalm 16:11
Lord,
While a new baby adds excitement and wonder to our lives, we are aware of the losses of parenting too.
We’ve lost a great deal of free time and flexibility in our schedule.
We’ve given up margin in our budget.
We have lost a sense of identity as we’re discovering what it means to be called “mom” and “dad.”
We have lost some connection with those in other ages and stages of life.
We feel the lack of time, privacy, and freedom to pursue romance as a couple.A child is priceless, but our lives will never be the same!
Guard our hearts from any resentment or fear that’s competing for our joy. Give us a glad spirit to embrace the changes happening in our lives. Keep our thoughts focused on your faithful goodness instead of the loss of what was comfortable, familiar, and simple in the past. Help us to see how you’re stretching us in order to grow our faith and reveal more of your power and love.
May we hold our little one with hearts of gratitude and joy as we celebrate the family we’re becoming in you.
Amen.
6) A Prayer for Protection
The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. – Psalm 121:7-8
Lord,
No amount of caution or diligence can insulate us from the sickness, pain, or dangers around us in this broken world. Our hearts can be overwhelmed by fear for our little one as we wonder:
How can we keep our child safe?
What is the best way to protect them from illness or injury?
How will we cope in the face of suffering?
Do we have what it takes to parent our little one in a precarious world?
Can we trust God to watch over us all the time? Our fears can easily cast a shadow over the beautiful gift of this child to our lives.
Help us to trust you as the One who protects us from harm. Give us bold confidence in your promises to “protect [us] from trouble and surround [us] with songs of deliverance” (Psalm 32:7).
Instead of dwelling on the bad news in the headlines, keep us focused on the good news of Jesus who is our life and hope forever. Even when trouble crosses our doorstep, let us keep the faith that you are in control and use all things for our good in the end. Keep our child under your wing, and fill us with peace through your powerful love.
Amen.
7) A Prayer of Thanks
I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me. – Psalm 13:6
Lord,
We are overwhelmed by your goodness that placed this precious child in our arms. We praise you for your miraculous power that created new life and knit us together as a family. How can we express our wonder and gratitude for all you have done?
Thank you for revealing more of your love for us as we overflow with love for our little one. Thank you for creating a legacy of faith as we commit to following Jesus, together. Thank you for the joy you’ve brought today and the special memories yet to be made in our home.
We thank you, Lord, for hopes fulfilled. For stories of your goodness to tell. For so much to experience and look forward to. For peace and confidence that you’ll go with us and our child every step of the way. We thank you for your love that is more “wide and long and high and deep” than we’ll ever comprehend (Ephesians 3:18). We praise your name, always.
Amen.
Our hope is that these prayers invite God’s presence into the life of your home in a whole new way. We are celebrating with you as you welcome a little one into your family. Blessings on you and the ones you love!
