12 Encouraging Prayers for a Friend in Need
When a friend is walking through a difficult season, is anxious about their future, or simply needs loving encouragement to hold on to Jesus, it isn’t always easy to know what to say.
And for them, it may be just as hard to find the words to ask for help—or even to bring their needs before the Lord.
In those moments, one of the most meaningful gifts you can offer is a prayer that speaks directly to their circumstances. Prayer can shine as a light in the darkness, offering clarity, comfort, and renewed hope.
We’ve put together this collection of prayers based on the types of prayer requests we receive most often, as well as the kinds of prayers we frequently find ourselves sharing with our own friends in their times of need. Our hope is that you’ll find one that fits your friend’s situation—and that you’ll be able to bless them by sending it their way today.
Here are 12 encouraging prayers to send a friend in need:
Prayers for Parents
Being a parent is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world—but it’s also one of the most challenging. And unlike most jobs, there’s no training period or employee manual that tells you what to do.
In both the high and low moments of parenting, we need prayer to help us guide our families in the right direction:
Prayer for the New Mom
Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. (3 John 2)
Lord,
You hold the power of life and healing in your hands. I pray you will give my growing baby all they need to thrive and grow. Shield them from any kind of harm. If their development is threatened, keep them safely on a path to wholeness. Keep us well and strong, secure and healthy as I continue this pregnancy in your loving care.
And as my little one is born and their childhood unfolds, I pray you will open wonderful doors to learn and try new things. Bless them with a strong body and curious mind to discover the world you’ve made. Surround them with a caring community who will build them up and guide their way. Help them to discover your beautiful purpose for all the days of their life.
Most of all, shepherd my little one’s soul so they will know you, trust you, and rest in your love. Write your Word on their heart. Fill them with your Spirit and keep them strong in faith. Be their joy and peace, always.
Amen.

Prayer for the Parent Feeling Distant
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:2-3)
Lord,
Busy schedules, different personalities and selfish desires can fracture my relationship with my child. Keep us humble so we can admit our mistakes.
Help us to forgive when we let each other down. Teach us to speak and act out of love instead of our emotions. Make us like-minded by Your Spirit – each looking to care for the other and to obey You in everything. Bind us together in love and peace.
Amen.
Prayer for the Parent Who’s Tired
“The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.” (Exodus 18:18)
Lord,
Each day it’s the same. From the moment I wake up, my kids drop their needs and wants and emotions into my lap. I’m constantly “on,” making sure they’re rested and fed, busy and learning, happy and getting along. I never stop scanning for threats to their safety or watching the clock to make sure we’re running on time. Pressure builds. Joy fades. Fatigue steals my patience and gratitude for my precious family.
Help me, Father, as I love and lead my children. Forgive me for my self-sufficiency that tries to go it alone. Bless me with encouragement and support from others who care. Give reassurance that I’m seen. Show me how to leave margin for relationships that build me up. Speak through your Word so your wisdom guides my way. Pour out a gift of rest that refreshes my spirit, and wrap me in your peace.
Amen.

Prayers for Anxiety
No matter what age or stage of life we find ourselves in, it seems like there’s always something we can worry about.
Whether your friend is worried about a specific upcoming event or they struggle with general anxiety, these prayers can help them find comfort in the promises of the Lord:
Prayer for Worries About the Future
…for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (Matthew 6:8)
Lord,
You know everything the future holds. No hardship or trouble I face will catch you off guard. Because you’re in control of all things, I don’t have to fear tomorrow. You stand ready to meet my needs and catch me before I fall.
Thank you for your loving care. Like an attentive Father, you watch over me every moment. You know when my resources are running low. If I grow tired, afraid, or discouraged, you draw close to build me up. Your Word holds the wisdom I need for whatever comes my way. Perfect love never lets me go.
I pray I walk in bold confidence because you’re with me. Teach me to abide in you every moment. Let peace and hope fill my life as I grow more and more sure of your love.
Amen.
Prayer for Mental Health Struggles
Surely you need guidance to wage war, and victory is won through many advisers. (Proverbs 24:6)
Lord,
In my battle for joy and peace, depression and anxiety are getting the upper hand. Where can relief be found? What is the cause of these difficult emotions? Do I need a doctor, therapist, prescription, or a self-help book to read? Is healing possible, or will I be bound by these struggles forever? My questions have no easy answers, and I don’t know what to do.
Your wisdom is my hope. I pray you will provide trustworthy guidance to help me grow and heal. Show me who to listen to and whose counsel will take me in the wrong direction. Give me a humble, teachable heart that is willing to be challenged. Use others to bring me to a place of strength and maturity where I walk in freedom and joy.
Amen.

Prayers for Hope
We’ve all been there—when the season of life we’re walking through feels so dark and so difficult that we can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. In the moments when we feel like we’re drowning in all of the obstacles life has thrown at us, we need a hand to reach out and pull us to safety.
Send these prayers to a friend whose heart needs a bit of hope:
Prayer for Walking Through a Dark Season
For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. (Isaiah 41:13)
Lord,
I do not feel like a warrior. After fighting for so long, I’ve been knocked to the ground. My supporters and assets, hard work and creativity have been trampled by the problem I face. Alone and broken, my hope for victory is gone.
Today I admit defeat. “Apart from you, [I] can do nothing.” (John 15:5) Let me know you as my helper in this impossible situation. Lead me by the hand in the way I should go. Rescue me from trouble. Overcome my enemies. Give me courage to stand up and face another day. Use this trial to prove your power and build my faith in your love. May I receive more of you than I’ve ever known before.
Amen.
Prayer for Strength in Sadness
Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? (Psalm 43:5)
Lord,
I’m overwhelmed and depressed. I feel like one more setback or disappointment will crush me. My faith is fragile as I wait for you to answer my prayers and bring relief. Looking for help and support, I feel alone and unseen by everyone. Only you can rescue me from this pain.
Rekindle the hope in my heart today. Be my Champion who fights my battles and protects me from harm. “Keep my lamp burning” and turn my darkness into light. (Psalm 18:28) Restore my trust in your power that is greater than any obstacle I face. Let me rest in your love that has never failed me yet.
By your Spirit, help me to worship. Put words of praise in my mouth for all you’ve done. You are life!
Amen.
Prayer for Overcoming Marriage Struggles
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:31-32)
Lord,
We don’t always fight fair. Our anger brings out ugly words and accusations. We give in to rage, losing control and each other’s hearts in the process. Bitterness is revealed as old hurts and frustrations come spilling out. The damage sometimes can feel beyond repair.
We pray for a new spirit between us today. Help us to forgive and heal the past. Give your grace that shows mercy and offers a chance to get it right. Quiet us so we’re calm, gentle, and sincere. Enable us to be tender and close again.
Amen.

Prayers for Healing
Each of us carries wounds. Some are fresh and painful, while others are slowly healing—though they can still ache when touched by certain circumstances.
The beautiful truth about wounds is that, with time, they do heal. These prayers are meant to remind a weary heart that healing is possible, and to encourage patience and hope along the way:
Prayer for Peace
When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. (Psalm 94:18-19)
Lord,
You know the triggers that spike panic without warning. My heart pounds and it’s hard to breathe. Racing thoughts make it impossible to think clearly or solve the issue at hand. As fear takes hold, I feel like lashing out, bursting into tears, or running for cover. It seems impossible to restore my sense of peace.
Yet you, Lord, are ready to meet me in the moment. Teach me to focus on your Word that promises your constant presence, power, and love. Move me to pray since you hear me when I cry out to you in distress. (Psalm 55:17) Bear the Spirit’s fruit of peace in my heart so I stand firm in the face of trouble. You are my comfort and joy.
Amen.
Prayer for Rest
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. (Proverbs 3:24)
Lord,
I dread the coming of night, knowing the hours of tension and fear I’ll face before morning. My mind races with all the worst-case scenarios I can imagine. Others’ needs and expectations fill me with stress. My problems loom large and seem impossible to overcome. I crave the relief of restorative sleep instead of this anxiety that wears me to the bone.
By your Spirit, replace my fear with faith. Give me confidence in your constant, watchful care. Show me how to place my worries in your hands like a child who trusts a good and faithful Father. Interrupt these persistent nights of insomnia with sweet and quiet rest. Saturate my mind with your promises to stay by my side so my anxieties give way to peace.
Amen.
Many of these prayers are from our book 101 Prayers to Cope with Depression. This collection is a wonderful resource to share with friends navigating mental health struggles:
Prayers for Faith
It’s easy to be steadfast in our faith when everything is going our way. But what about when life throws a curveball? How do we keep our faith from withering when a loved one is battling a serious illness, our family is facing financial hardship, or the injustices of this world are breaking our hearts?
The truth is, these are the moments when we need our faith the most. Allow these prayers to encourage and anchor a friend who needs to find solace in their relationship with God:
Prayer for Overcoming Doubts
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. (James 1:2-3)
Lord,
I’m barely hanging on. Pain and trouble have changed my life so much, it will never look the same. I want to move forward, but impossible barriers block my path. You promise you are with me. You love me. You’re my “refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1) Yet while I know you’re my faithful God, I still feel alone and afraid.
I want to pass this test of my faith. Give me strength to keep believing in your goodness. Sustain my hope that rescue is on its way. Make me so sure of your love that I carry on with confidence and joy. Produce perseverance that overcomes doubt and despair. Keep me close to you.
Amen.
Prayer for Remembering God’s Love
I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.” (Psalm 77:11-12)
Lord,
I remember how you met my needs and rescued me from trouble. In times of confusion, you marked a clear path for my feet. Answered prayers put down deep roots of faith in my heart. Nights of weeping gave way to joyful mornings, just as you promised. (Psalm 30: 5) Over and over, you proved your power and love in my life.
I’m walking through another dark valley today. Blessings were snatched from my hands. Doors have closed in my face. Yet no matter my losses, I still have you. Your love is constant. You remain by my side. Help me to remember your works in the past so I hold on to hope for tomorrow.
Amen.
(BONUS PRAYER) Prayer for Trusting in the Lord
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life. (Proverbs 13:12)
Lord,
You know the most deep and constant longings of my heart. Day after day, I call out to you in prayer and wait for you to answer. As time goes by my hope wears thin. Do you hear me? Will you meet my needs? Do you know the heartache I feel? Will you bring the relief and blessing I’m hoping for?
I need strength to keep trusting and asking. Give me faith to believe you will “bring about justice for [your] chosen ones, who cry out to [you] day and night.” (Luke 18:7) Restore my confidence in your power and love as I see you working. Lift my spirits and fill me with overwhelming joy as you open your hand to satisfy my heart’s desires. You are faithful and good.
Amen.
