9 Prayers for Your Children: Asking God for Protection and Peace
We are so blessed to have five wonderful children—all of whom are navigating very different stages of life. Our oldest children have already started families of their own, while our youngest has just started his very first year of high school.
Over the years, we’ve learned that every age comes with its own unique joys—and its own set of fears.
When you’re nursing an infant, you pray that their body will grow healthy and strong. Fast forward to their school years, and your heart aches with hope that they will make good friends and wise choices. Even after they’ve flown the nest, your heart still carries them—longing for them to stand firm in their faith and discover the right path for their life.
All this is to say—we know well the weight of caring for the ones who depend on us most. Like you, we often find ourselves worrying about their safety, happiness, and future.
How can we support our kids as they face life’s challenges for the first time? How can we provide assistance without stepping too far into their independence?
For our family, prayer has been the most powerful answer. When we pray for our children, we’re not only asking God to protect and guide them—we’re also reminding our own hearts that the Lord loves our children just as we do and will never leave their side.
Here are 9 prayers for your children that you can lean on when worries start to weigh you down:
Prayers for the Anxious Parent
A Prayer for Your Child’s Protection
For in the day of trouble He will keep me safe in His dwelling; He will hide me in the shelter of His sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.
– Psalm 27:5
Lord and Savior,
This world holds many dangers for my child. Keep them safe from accidents, illness and injury. Protect them from anyone who would abuse or exploit their innocence. Guard them from false teachers who would deny Your truth and discourage their faith. Shield them from gossip and slander, loneliness and rejection. Be their mighty Guardian and peaceful shelter wherever they go.
Amen.
A Prayer for Your Child’s Faith
Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.
– Hebrews 11:6
Lord,
Fill my child’s heart with an insatiable longing for You. May they seek You earnestly and discover the rewards You have in store. When the world denies Your Word and rejects Jesus, give them strength to hold on to the truth. Replace their doubts with assurance, and their confusion with clarity. Be pleased with my child as they grow in faith and trust.
Amen.
A Prayer for Your Child’s Purity
How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to Your word. I seek You with all my heart; do not let me stray from Your commands.
– Psalm 119:9-10
Lord,
Fill my child with a passion for You and Your Word. Teach them Your ways so they can remain pure in a world bent on stealing their innocence. Let the Scriptures be their truth and their guide as they grow. Give them wisdom and strength to resist temptation. Be their one desire, and may they keep their eyes fixed on You so they can obey You in everything.
Amen.
Prayers for Common Parenting Fears
A Prayer for Making Wise Choices
Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I trust Your commands.
– Psalm 119:66
Lord God,
My child has so many choices ahead of them—classes, careers, relationships, financial decisions—without Your help they won’t know which way to go. Deepen their knowledge of Your Word so they know what’s right. Fill them with Your Spirit so they conform their plans to Your will. Give them good sense and insight beyond their years as they navigate the road ahead. Let them love You and seek to please You in everything they do.
Amen.
A Prayer for Children Who Need Healing
Heal me, LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for You are the one I praise.
– Jeremiah 17:14
Lord,
When my child gets sick and discouraged, relieve their pain and restore their strength by Your healing power. Bind their wounds, cure their diseases, and bring peace to their heart as their perfect Physician. Fill them with praise as they experience Your saving love and healing touch.
Amen.
A Prayer for Your Child to Make Friends
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.
– Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
Lord,
My child needs a friend. It’s painful to feel left out and alone. When hard days come, there’s no one to care and offer an encouraging word. Give them someone to stay by their side and help them up when they fall down. Let them experience Your faithful love through the joy of a true friend that loves them too.
Amen.
Prayers for a Struggling Child
A Prayer for Children Struggling to Sleep
The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul.
– Psalm 23:1-3
Lord God,
My child is overwhelmed by a hectic schedule and the pressure to succeed. Call them away from the busyness and give them quiet rest. Refresh their soul and renew their strength. Help them to remember once again how You provide everything they need. Set them free from working and striving on their own – let them be still and know that You are God. Soothe their spirit as they quiet themself in Your presence.
Amen.
A Prayer for Children Dealing with Bullies
I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; but You give us victory over our enemies, You put our adversaries to shame.
– Psalm 44:6-7
Father,
You know better than anyone if my child is being bullied. Give them strength when bullies threaten their safety, their confidence and their peace. Defend my child from their enemies. Crush any plans to harm their body, their reputation or their self-respect. Surround them with protection and support. Build their courage to face any threat, trusting that You are by their side. Thank You for Your faithful love and power to save.
Amen.
A Prayer for Your Child Who Feels Lost
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
– Psalm 119:105
Father,
My child is at a crossroads; they don’t know which way to go. Move their heart to desire Your perfect plan. Speak through Your Word so they know which path to take. Help them to understand how Scripture applies to their life as they make choices from day to day. Let them walk in Your light without stumbling in the darkness of this world. Give them faithful guidance for every step.
Amen.
Bonus: A Prayer for Worried Parents
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
– PHILIPPIANS 4:6
Lord,
My imagination can run wild with all that might harm the child I love. Will they suffer sickness or injuries? Will they feel bullied, left out, or second best? What if they struggle to learn or grow? How will they cope with disappointment? Will they be happy? Strong? Secure?
My fears can steal my sleep and test my faith in you. Help me to trust in your power and love that never fails. When this world seems chaotic, give assurance that you’re in control. Move me to pray when I’m tempted to worry and fret. Let me take you at your Word that says you’re “our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).
Fill me with brave hope that encourages my child. Let me be grateful every day for your goodness to us all.
Amen.
As parents, our children are so dear to our hearts. Sometimes, we may wish we could keep them safe in the shelter of our arms forever. However, the hardest yet most beautiful truth of parenting is that we must let them go out on their own and experience all the world has to offer.
But this doesn’t mean we can’t cover them in prayer. In fact, some of the greatest battles we can fight for our children happen on our knees—bringing our worries to the Lord and asking for His peace, guidance, and protection.
In this blog, we’ve included prayers for some of the most common fears and worries we hear from parents. But we also know that parenting concerns are often more specific. That’s why we created resources specially targeted for boys and girls:

My son is 20 yrs old. He has a calling on his life and he knows it. However, he’s a diabetic struggling against GOD’S CALLING and abusive to his girlfriend. I’m a Christian mother/wife. I pray constantly and sometimes want to give up. I don’t want him to be a bad influence to his younger brother who really loves him and looks up to him. It’s hard and yes it does steal my sleep. Other than praying and sometimes worrying if my child will end up dead or in jail I don’t know what else to do… BUT PRAY!!!
Ola Mae, thank you for sharing your heart of love and concern for your son. And for also sharing your faithfulness in prayer that encourages us to pray for our kids too! We are asking God for peace as you wait for him to work in your son’s life. We’re praying for healing of your son–body, mind, and spirit–so he can live out his God-given calling and create a gentle, lifegiving relationship with his girlfriend. And, we’re asking God for discernment for your younger son, that he would recognize what is worthy of praise in his brother and what needs the Lord’s renewal.
Lord, bless this family and draw each of them closer to you. Restore hope. Break the power of sin and the enemy’s deception. Protect each one from harm, and overcome every doubt and hurt with your unlimited love. Amen.
