8 Prayers for Your College Student Heading Off to School
You’ve shopped for the bedding and towels. The shampoo and laundry detergent. The backpack, pens, and laptop case. You stocked a stash of instant noodles and protein bars. Everything is ready for your child’s college move-in day…except your heart.
As moms and dads, it’s a bittersweet moment when our kids leave the nest for school. We worry they’ll be lonely, hungry, or overwhelmed by their class schedule. We wonder how we’ll say “I love you” from across the miles. We question how we’ll cope with a too-quiet house, and if we did enough to prepare our child to strike out on their own.
Yet as we wrestle with our fears and the ache in our chest, we don’t have to struggle alone. God stands ready to hear our prayers and wrap his love around our child every day. By taking every need, hope, and anxious thought to the Lord, peace can be found.
Today, we offer eight prayers to cover your college student as they head off to school. We pray they encourage your spirit and allow you to release your child with joy.
1. A Prayer for Health
Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. (3 John 2)
Lord,
My child will need strength and endurance to tackle the work ahead. Yet late nights, cafeteria food, and the close quarters of campus living may leave my child vulnerable to sickness. Who will notice they’re exhausted or run down? How will they find margin to rest? What if they ignore their need for help or care? I’m afraid my child’s health will suffer in the months to come.
Help my child to take the rest and nourishment they need to thrive. Give them wisdom to balance their work, sleep, and fun with friends. Grow them in self-awareness so they can recognize any signs they’re unwell. Surround them with compassionate students and adults who are attentive to their needs. May my child lean on you as their source of strength, healing, and comfort each day.
Amen.
2. A Prayer for Friendship
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
Lord,
No amount of success at school can satisfy the needs of my child’s heart. They long to be known. To feel wanted. To be confident they have something to offer and that they belong. My child needs true friends who celebrate the incredible person you created them to be.
Protect my child from loneliness as they find their place at school. Draw them toward those who show integrity, kindness, and respect for everyone. Give courage to be open and real and to create space for others to be the same. Spark laughter and open doors to create memories that last a lifetime.
Give my child your compassion for those who feel invisible or pushed to the margins. Use them to shine your light of love as they offer the gift of friendship this year. Reveal yourself as their true Friend who never leaves their side.
Amen.
3. A Prayer for Discipline
…the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied. (Proverbs 13:4)
Lord,
Life on campus holds every kind of chance to try exciting things, grow new relationships, and test the waters of independence. Yet those blessings can easily turn into distractions that sabotage their progress at school.
Give my child strength to show up to class and to work with diligence each week. Help them to craft a routine that sets them up for success. Surround them with students and professors who spur them on to bring their best to the table. Lead them to support if they’re struggling or slipping behind. If they feel paralyzed with overwhelm, breathe your peace into their spirit so they can carry on. May my child reap the rewards of pressing forward, one day at a time.
Amen.
4. A Prayer for Discernment
Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. (Ephesians 5:8-10)
Lord,
College brings one decision after another. My child will wonder, Who should I room with next semester? Should I change my major? Can I handle adding another extracurricular to my plate? How will I cover my costs without drowning in debt? Will it hurt anything if I go to that party? Are the values and beliefs I was raised with really my own? These college years will test my child’s confidence, convictions, and identity for years to come.
Lead my child to mentors and voices who will speak your wisdom into their life. Move them to open your Word to find your loving guidance in its pages. Keep them humble so they welcome advice and seek your face in prayer. Fill them with a peaceful, patient spirit that waits for your best plans to unfold.
Guard my child’s heart and mind from anxiety, negative influences, and the enemy’s lies that only bring confusion. Mark out a clear path so they walk in your will, always.
Amen.
5. A Prayer to Cope with Pressure
When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. (Psalm 94:18-19)
Lord,
Only you know the battles my child will face in the months ahead. The workload may feel too heavy. They might feel alone and unseen in the crowd. A full schedule and empty wallet might steal their sleep. The pressure to succeed and live up to expectations may push them to their breaking point. They need you, Father, to help them cope with it all.
Send comfort and relief to my child when they need it most. Bring caring friends and helpful faculty to stand in their corner. Protect their health. Supply their “daily bread” (Luke 11:3). Cover their room with your peace so it’s a haven of rest each night.
Temptations will come that promise relief but only bring pain in the end. Guard my child from addictive escapes from their troubles. Fill them with courage to carry on instead of giving up in fear. Grow a trusting, open relationship between us so I can encourage them along the way. Let my child find deep comfort in your loving arms.
Amen.
6. A Prayer to Guard Their Heart
So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. (2 Timothy 2:22)
Lord,
As a young adult, my child will dream about their future and who might share it by their side. They’ll have the freedom to pursue relationships with people who spark their interest. Their heart will crave a sense of belonging that says I’m wanted. I’m valued. I’m known. Yet so often, it’s tempting to settle for a shallow or short-lived romance instead of selfless, enduring love.
Remind my child of their precious worth in your sight. Guard their heart from relationships that will tear them down or lead them away from you. Keep any interest in dating from crowding out the valuable friendships in their life. As they consider committing to someone, draw them to those who know you, follow you, and put you first in everything. Bless my child with a love that flows from the love of your Son.
Amen.
7. A Prayer for Growth
Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. (James 1:4)
Lord,
So many lessons can only be learned through our mistakes, failures, and the challenges we face. It’s when we hurt that we discover your healing comfort. It’s in our need that we know you as the generous One who provides. In failure, we can be humbled and lean on your wisdom and strength. When we are at our worst, your mercy, forgiveness, and love can make us new. I pray that my child’s struggles at school will grow them up and turn their heart toward you.
Give my child a teachable spirit as they move through this year. Surround them with those who hold them accountable and bring out their best. Let hard times do their work of building courage, endurance, and trust in you. Raise up my child to lead by example as you mature them in wisdom day by day.
Amen.
8. A Prayer to Trust and Let Go
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. (Psalm 28:7)
Lord,
My child is a precious gift from you that has changed my life and changed me forever. Thank you for bringing them this far. Thank you for opening doors of opportunity. Thank you for your promise to watch over them with love wherever they go.
In the turmoil of my emotions, I pray for a willing heart to release my child into all you have planned. Fill me with praise for your goodness to our family. Show me how to embrace this new season and support my child with joy.
Move me from fear to faith in your goodness that never fails. Expose any areas I struggle to give up control as a parent. Keep me in step with your Spirit, so I know when to speak and when to simply listen. Use me and our home as a safe place to dream, to struggle, and to celebrate the milestones ahead. As I place my child in your hands, may I rest in your love more than ever before.
Amen.
Launching your child into the world comes with a complex mix of feelings. It never gets easier with each child who walks out your door. We felt these same doubts, concerns, and fears as each of our kids took steps of independence. But what does bring comfort is the knowledge that God will always be walking with them, even when we can’t. We may not always be able to step in as their safety net, but the Lord will never leave their side.
Even as our children leave our home, we can still pray that the Lord will protect and guide thier steps. If it’s a struggle to put words to your hopes and fears for your child, or you’re looking for a way to grow a consistent prayer practice, we highly recommend our Powerful Prayers for Your Son and Daughter books. You can reach for them when your child has a difficult exam coming up. When it’s a Friday night and you worry over the choices they’ll make. When you hope God will give them courage to walk up to another student in the dining hall and ask, “Can I join you?“
