Dear Mom, Here’s What Your Family Wants You to Know This Mother’s Day

Rob Teigen

When Joanna and I first met, I was attracted to all kinds of things about her. Her optimism, her free spirit, and her pretty, green eyes had me hooked. But I had no idea the person I would encounter once she became a mother. It’s hugely rewarding to be a dad, but a woman goes to a place I just can’t understand as soon as she has a child.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I want to pause for a moment and give a special message to not just the moms in my life but to all the moms in our Growing Home Together community. I know Mother’s Day can be a bustle of activity and sometimes us husbands can fail to say all the ways we appreciate you, see your strength, and recognize your sacrifice for your children.

Here’s a special message to all the moms out there! (If you are a dad reading this, maybe pull your wife aside and read this to her to express how much you appreciate her!)

Moms Invest in Their Children

In the economy of motherhood, the joy of her kids means joy for her.

I’ve seen it time and time again. My wife would choose a beat-up, bargain laptop for herself, but make sure our children had brand-new devices. Our girls would get styled, but she would put off a trip to her favorite salon for weeks.

Moms sacrifice so that their children can have the best. They put their blood, sweat, tears, and then some into shaping little minds and hearts day after day. The joy that she brings to her children brings joy to her own heart.

Thank you for sacrificing your time and energy, and for consistently seeing what our children need.

Moms Don’t Quit

I can’t tell you how many hard and amazing things my wife has endured for our children, starting with childbirth! She stuck with it through the tedious chore of potty training even though our children fought it tooth and nail.

She’s well aware that her teenagers are going to push the speed limit, the homework deadline, and Friday’s curfew, but she still lets them out of the house. She sets herself up for a lot of grief but goes back for more. Through all the chore lists, meal planning, helping with homework, and so much more, moms don’t quit.

Thank you for believing our D-student can succeed and putting in the extra hours studying with them to make it happen. Thank you for the sleepless nights with our baby making sure they are comforted when they are sick. Thank you for pouring yourself out and never giving up on our children.

Moms are Superhuman

Seriously though, do you know of anyone else who is willing to brave any cold or fever to comfort their child? Or stick it out with a 13-year-old girl in a dressing room who is having a meltdown over a pair of jeans?

She has the unique ability to see through the attitude to the hurting heart inside her son or daughter. Pouring out constant prayers, her love “always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres,” no matter how broken her child may be (1 Corinthians 13:7). No kid can go so far that a mom’s love won’t follow.

Moms are there for us rain or shine. They show up to celebrate our best days and to comfort us on our worst ones. They’ll jump in to mend our broken hearts and work tirelessly to work themselves out of a job.

Thank you for your incredible effort and seemingly superhuman ability to care for our children. You lean on the strength of the Lord to give you this awe-inspiring superpower.

As I look at my wife and her life as a mom (and see how my own mom loves my brothers and me), it’s hard for me to relate. But even though I don’t always “get” her, I’m glad we’ve got her!

To every mom today: I hope you had a truly happy and blessed Mother’s Day as we celebrated God’s gift to your family – you.
