Our Takeaways:
1) It takes hard, holy, heart-work to keep a marriage going. Great marriages don’t happen by accident. They take effort and intentional work. This could mean being more attentive to how our spouse receives love—knowing their preferences and what makes them feel appreciated. It’s an ongoing choice to love our spouse and to work at our marriage each day.
2) Learn how to speak your spouse’s language. Often in marriage, we default to doing what comes naturally to us. So while one person may show love by helping with the pile of dirty dishes, what speaks love for their spouse might actually be quality time together. This is why it’s important to learn what speaks love to your spouse. For more resources on love languages, check out this past episode with Gary Chapman, the creator behind the Five Love Languages.
3) It’s important to cultivate a life outside of our spouse. Our spouse cannot be all things for us. Yes, it’s true that they will be a huge part of your life and even one of the people who knows you most intimately. However, they are still human. Our spouses will fail us, just as we will fail them. This is why it’s important to prioritize your relationship with Jesus first and foremost. On top of that, it’s very healthy to cultivate individual relationships with our friends, to nourish our bonds with family members, and to enjoy our own hobbies.
