Episode 104: Simple Steps to Create a Rhythm of Rest—with Kathi Lipp
If you’re like us, your weekly routine is filled with events, chores, doctor’s appointments, and more. Depending on the size of your family and how many obligations each person has to juggle, it can be quite challenging to coordinate all the details of who needs to be where and when.
At our house, we have a big calendar hung on the wall of our kitchen that keeps everyone on track and (hopefully) on time. But amid the pressure of our busy family schedule, we constantly find ourselves craving enough time to just breathe and enjoy the company of the people we love. At times, the calendar on our wall makes it feel impossible to find that time—and when we do go too long without Sabbath, rest, and intimacy with God, our souls suffer for it.
That’s why we are excited to welcome Kathi Lipp back to the podcast. Kathi is a speaker, bestselling author, and host of the Clutter Free Academy podcast. Kathi has discovered simple steps for creating a rhythm of rest in our families, and she shares some of them in her latest book, Sabbath Soup: Weekly Menus and Rhythms to Make Space for a Day of Rest. This book holds some delicious recipes, and it also guides us in making Sabbath rest a consistent part of our lives.
In this episode, Kathi shares:
- Simple and practical ways to build a day of rest into every week
- How consistent Sabbath rest will change your life
- The power of a meal to minister to others
- Where to start decluttering before your holiday hosting
- And much more!
We hope this episode is helpful not just as you host for the holidays, but all year round!

Our Takeaways:
1) The kitchen is the heart of the home. This space drives our routines and is the place where family and friends come together. Simple, targeted shifts in meal planning make an amazing difference in lowering stress, managing our budget of time and money, and setting us free to grow our relationships.
2) Plan for Sabbath to interrupt your routine. It’s important that you make an intentional plan for Sabbath rather than staying at home and following your normal routine. When we don’t break from our routine by changing locations or making a plan to do something different, we tend to fall back into old habits. This might look like going for a walk, sitting at your favorite coffee shop, or playing games together as a family. Give yourself an extra dose of grace as you start to build this habit.
3) Start with surfaces when cleaning. Most people’s first instinct is to start cleaning and decluttering in the back of their closet, but this is the wrong approach. Whether you’re cleaning so you can host during the holidays or you’re just carrying out a routine cleaning, start by focusing on the surfaces in the rooms you spend the most time in. This means you’ll want to start in your kitchen, dining room, or living room. These areas are also most likely where your guests will spend the most time when you’re hosting. Tackling these areas first can help you check off a significant portion of your cleaning list right away.
