This political election has exposed how divided we’ve become as a nation–and the division in our own hearts between fear and faith. We carry frustration, anxiety, and doubt over all that lies ahead. Week after week we’ve suffered waves of trouble from sickness, bitter disputes, and natural disasters that no human leader can resolve. No matter where we look, peace seems impossible to find. Yet the Father has invited us to find courage as we walk through these days together as his children. We share this devotional as a gift of hope for your anxious heart on election day.
King of Kings
The authorities that exist have been
established by God.
(Romans 13:1)
Politicians break our trust. Elections stir up ugly accusations and divide people from one another. Leaders fail to stand for those they’re meant to serve. We fall into fear of losing our freedom and safety.
Today, remember who’s really in control. God is on his throne! He’s the one who puts earthly government in place. He uses the best and the worst to accomplish his perfect will. No human authority can surpass God’s power and majesty:
“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.'” (Romans 14:11)
Right now we can choose to pray instead of panic. Let “petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2) Trust in God as your true provider and protector. Believe you’re in his hands.
Obey the Lord by obeying the law. Show respect for your leaders out of submission to God. Your peaceful life will show his goodness to everyone and he will make his name great.
Lord, we’re in desperate need of your Spirit’s assurance that no matter what happens, you’re in control of all things. We need hope for our anxious hearts on this election day in our land.
Even when we feel paralyzed by fear from yesterday’s crises or tomorrow’s threat, we can put our trust in you. As King of kings your power is our strength. You work out all things according to your perfect plan.
In the days ahead, help us to trust instead of worry and fret. You hold our family through the darkest days and the most difficult of circumstances. Guard our hearts from putting our hope in this world that can only bring disappointment. Instead, give us your perfect peace through the love of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
(Isaiah 41:10)
