When the Holidays Don’t Feel Peaceful: A Christmas Devotion
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” – John 14:27
A couple of years ago we had the craziest Christmas of our lives.
A blizzard hit hard.
Our house was full to the brim as we hosted unexpected guests.
The furnace died.
We were called on as emergency dogsitters for a sad and anxious pup.
Joanna’s car got stuck in the snow. Twice.
That Christmas felt like a week to survive instead of a joyful occasion to celebrate. And to be honest, we felt a little guilty that “peace on earth” felt missing from our home and hearts.
Maybe you, too, are feeling pushed and pulled in this Christmas season. For many of us, peace can seem impossible to find.
- Our kids are hyped up on sugary cookies and candy canes.
- Every last dollar is squeezed as we shop for gifts and groceries.
- Stress builds as we wait for last-minute deliveries and we hustle to all the holiday gatherings and events on the calendar.
- We strain to meet others’ expectations while putting our own hopes for the season on the back burner.
- The struggle is real to wrap up loose ends at work and hang in there until school break begins.
- Our families are excited but tired, hurried but hopeful, trying hard but afraid we’ll miss the true beauty of Christmas in the end.
Yet no no matter how busy, anxious, or distracted we might feel, the Word holds true. Our Immanuel has come and is with us at this moment. The gift of His peace is ready to open so He can restore our souls. Our troubles and fears can melt away as we trust in His love that never lets us go.
Today, let’s say yes to God’s peace. Feeling broke? We have a good Father who provides. Overworked and worn out? He is our strength and our rest . Feeling guilty that you can’t make everyone’s dreams come true? Jesus gives grace upon grace. Afraid of what the new year might hold? He is our strong tower who keeps us safe. Grieving the empty space at your table? He is our Comfort and Friend.
This Christmas we can hold on tight to the peace of Jesus no matter what we face. He is with us. He’s for us. He is good and He is enough.
Lord,
I thought if I gave more and worked hard that I could keep stress and trouble from landing on my doorstep. But as Christmas draws near, peace seems impossible to find. I need you to kindle a fresh faith in your love and goodness in my life.
Lead me into your rest. Give assurance that I am seen and that you care. Help me to trust you will meet my needs. Speak through your Word so I remember your power, your truth, and your faithfulness to your children for all time. Be my peace that endures through it all. Your love is my hope and my joy, always.
Amen.
To help you connect with God and find peace through prayer, we created these prayer books to put words to what’s on your heart. Blessings on you in this season and in the coming year!
