Lord, you know my kids better than anyone else. You know where their feet travel and their imaginations fly. Each spoken word, every question and struggle, and all the details of their days are seen and heard by you, their Creator. This intimate knowledge of my children is proof of your deep, wonderful love that never lets them go.
Open my eyes to see my kids like you do. Give discernment to identify their unique gifts, abilities, and passions as they discover your call for their lives. Share insight into their motivations and insecurities—I want to understand what moves them forward and holds them back. Help me to tell the difference between true confidence and the false, brave face they wear to hide their fear. Let me see beneath the surface to comprehend their ideas, personalities, and emotions.
Enable me to recognize my children’s heart-wounds so I can offer comfort and help. Expose their temptations and sin so I can train them in what’s right. Reveal their strengths and capabilities so I can celebrate each step of growth and independence. Offer a glimpse of the path you’re marking out for the future—I want to support and encourage them in all you’ve got planned.
Lord, “you are the God who sees me.” (Genesis 16:13) You prove that love goes far beyond affection. It’s found in the closeness between us, in knowing you and being known. I pray to better know and understand my kids today by the power of your Spirit. Open my eyes and enlighten my heart so I can love them as you love me.
Amen.
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.
(Psalm 139:1-6)
“I am the good shepherd;
I know my sheep and my sheep know me—
just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—
and I lay down my life for the sheep.
(John 10:14-15)
