Father’s Day Roundup: Prayers, Dad Jokes, and More…

June 11, 2024

Rob & Joanna Teigen

Father’s Day is nearly here! I know at our house, we’re looking forward to celebrating Rob who gives his all to our family. He doesn’t often show the weight of it, but it’s no small thing to keep us safe and meet our needs with a willing spirit and a sense of humor through it all.

We know the dads in your life mean so much to you too. This Father’s Day is the perfect time to add to his growing goofy tie collection (or in our case, his set of silly socks), but it’s also the chance to pause, reflect, and encourage the men who make such a difference in the life of your family.

Dads work hard to lead their families well. They never stop working to provide and to teach their kids to follow after God’s own heart. And, they’re fun! Who’s better at roughhousing, silly jokes, and keeping the laughter going?

Maybe today you’re a dad looking for encouragement. Or, you’re looking for new ways to appreciate your dad on Father’s Day. Maybe you’re a mom looking for the perfect gift to equip your husband as he navigates fatherhood. If that’s you, you won’t want to miss this roundup. We’ve got resources for everything from encouraging a dad’s personal growth, affirming the great dad they are, sharing some laughs with fun dad jokes, and tools to help them lead their families with faith and strength. This one goes out to all the dads!

Prayers for Dad

These are a few great prayers for dads to pray, and could simply be adjusted as a prayer to pray over a dad in your life as well!

For a Steady Heart:

“They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.” (Psalm 112:7)

Lord, in this world, I see disaster at every turn. There is no escape from news of destruction and pain. Life feels out of control, and I wonder where security can be found. I’m grateful for your invitation to put all my fears and concerns in your hands. I want to know you as “my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge.” (Psalm 144:2)

Show me how to see you in my circumstances so I walk in joy instead of fear. Replace my anxiety with godly fear of you, the One who is above all things. Give me strength and assurance of your promises so my heart can be steadfast all the time and lead my family well. You are my perfect peace. Amen.

For God’s Good Gifts:

“So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.” (Joshua 24:13)

Lord, every good gift in my life is from you (James 1:17). You’ve blessed me far beyond what I could earn or deserve. You have made me a dad through my children. Yet this world sends the message that my own hard work can achieve whatever I want. That kind of self-sufficiency says I’m the master of my destiny and I hold control of my future.

Restore my gratitude for every talent, opportunity, and provision you’ve poured into my life. Guard my heart from worry over practical necessities since you know what I need before I ask (Matthew 6:8). Let your faithful generosity show everyone what a loving and powerful God you truly are. May I trust you always. Amen.

For True Riches:

“Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.” (Isaiah 55:2)

Lord, I waste so much of my time, talent, and resources chasing after things that offer only momentary satisfaction. After a reward, or a promotion, the joy is short-lived so I strive for another achievement. Entertainment and pleasure can only provide temporary relief from my stress. Nothing but Jesus—my bread of life and living water—can fill the void inside (John 6:34, 7:38).

I want to pursue eternal riches that will delight my soul. Free me from the trap of chasing the fleeting things of this world. Let me see each of my blessings as gifts from your hand. May I praise you always as the Giver of all good things. Amen.

For Calmed Anxiety:

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.” (Matthew 6:25).

Lord, anxiety fills my mind and steals my sleep as I wonder, Will I have enough? To ease this fear, I put in long hours at my job. I strive and save to grow my bank account. My full pantry, closet, and garage testify to my worried gathering and storing up for an uncertain tomorrow.

Reassure my heart that you provide all I need. Teach me to be content with what you’ve given. In times of plenty or struggle, help me to trust you with a thankful heart. Show me when I’m working in fear instead of diligence. When the enemy tempts me with cravings for material things, keep me satisfied in you. Help me to trust in you to provide for my family and care for my children far more than I ever could. May I pursue treasure in heaven that will never pass away. Amen.

For Brave Strength:

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

Lord, I’m walking on unfamiliar ground right now. The giants I see on the horizon put fear in my soul. The uncertainties of life—my career path, financial security, health, safety of my family, and relationships—feel too difficult to overcome. I’m discouraged and wonder how to carry on.

Yet through it all, you say, “Do not be afraid.” Nothing is impossible for you. In this moment, show me I have nothing to fear if you are on my side (Psalm 118:6). You promise to use all things for my good in the end (Romans 8:28). When all hope seems lost, nothing can separate me from your love (Romans 8:38). In you I have strength and courage to face the day. I’m secure as your son for all time. Amen.

Husband Revolution

At marriageaftergod.com/husband-revolution, Aaron Smith challenges us about:

“Taking the road less traveled in marriage. The world has made it too easy for you to walk away. To quit and to give up on the gift that God gave you, your wife. It may even applaud you if you do. The Enemy is working overtime to destroy any and all credibility the church has by breaking up our marriages. What do you think the world thinks about God when they see His followers acting just like them? I believe we as husbands have a unique and powerful opportunity to share Christ with the world simply in the way we love our wives.”

To help us grab that opportunity, Aaron Smith and his wife, Jennifer, created a collection of smart, practical titles to show us how it’s done. They share our personal passion for prayer in the life of our home. Become the praying dad, husband, and couple who experience the transforming power of God in our family.

Father’s Day is a special time to appreciate all the things that make your dad great. We hope that some of these resources can help you appreciate him more, encourage him in his walk with God, and laugh. Happy Father’s Day!
