A Valentine’s Day Prayer for Husbands and Wives

A Valentine's Day Prayer for Husbands and Wives

February 14, 2019

Joanna Teigen

Lord, our relationship is a beautiful gift from you. No matter the struggles we face in this life, you give us all we need to keep our love alive. We lift up this Valentine’s Day prayer as we celebrate our love for each other and for you. We accept your invitation to come to you, asking you to pour out your blessing on our marriage.

Encourage us by uniting us with Christ, who sets us free from all guilt and fear. Comfort us with your love when we’re wounded, weary, and weak. Let our resolve and commitment to our marriage be equal and sure, no matter the battles we face.

Knit our hearts together by your Spirit, making us one. Unify our goals, our hopes and dreams, and our priorities so we live in agreement day by day. Let humility guard our hearts from selfish, arrogant attitudes that demand our own way. Keep us from petty arguments and critical spirits that say you’re not enoughInstead, we long for eyes to see the priceless good in one another so we’re grateful for every moment of our life together.

Teach us your tenderness and compassion so we can find safety and acceptance in each other’s arms. Fill our mouths with words that affirm and elevate, rather than tearing one another down. Give us the servant-heart of Jesus so we lavish our affection, time, and energy to bless the one we love.

Keep us blameless—free from the shame of betrayal and sin. Make our thoughts, our actions, and our marriage bed pure and honorable at all times. Transform our household into a beacon of your light, so that all who see our love see the love of Christ himself.

Build our home on the firm, unshakeable foundation of your Word. May we abide in your love all the days of our life together.

Amen.

Therefore if you have any encouragement
from being united with Christ,
if any comfort from his love,
if any common sharing in the Spirit,
if any tenderness and compassion,
then make my joy complete by being like-minded,
having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.
Rather, in humility value others above ourselves,
not looking to your own interests
but each of you to the interests of the others.

Do everything without grumbling or arguing,
so that you may become blameless and pure,
“children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”

Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky
as you hold firmly to the word of life.
(Philippians 2:1-4, 14-16)
