8 Bedtime Prayers to Bless the Child You Love
Last night, Rob and I were able to re-live our early parenting years by putting our little grandsons to bed. Sticky sweatshirts were traded for soft, clean pajamas. Pearly baby teeth were brushed and lights turned low. Their eyelids grew heavy as we snuggled them in our arms, whispering stories and songs in their ears. There is nothing like bedtime to bring calm and bond our hearts to the little ones we love.
Every mom and dad can relate to that moment when your child’s head snuggles into their pillow and the busyness of the day comes to an end. Yet for each family, and even each child, the bedtime routine can look a little different.
Maybe you have a child who struggles with bad dreams. Or you have a teen whose idea of tucking in is a mumbled “g’night” from behind a closed door. You might be in the throes of elaborate toddler routines that leave you exhausted and frustrated, rocking a fussy baby, or trying to soothe your middle-schooler’s turbulent emotions.
Whatever season of parenting you find yourself in today, we know it’s tempting to rush those last few minutes of the day to get some well-deserved rest for yourself. Yet after years of bedtimes with our five kids, we know the blessings you’ll find through weaving prayer into your bedtime routine with your children.
Prayer changes things. It softens our perspective as parents. It works in the hearts of our kids. It reminds us of our rightful place in their world: that God is God, and we are not.
Prayer helps us rest in His powerful hands, trusting Him with those we love most.
If you can build a habit of nightly prayer with your child, that’s wonderful! It will encourage and comfort their hearts to hear you lifting them up to the Lord. It will also help them see prayer and worship as a habits to form in their own routines as they grow.
But even if it’s a challenge to pray with your child during this season of parenting, God still hears you. You can make a practice of seeking God’s face on your own at the end of each day. We strongly believe prayer is the most powerful parenting tool that we have!
That’s why we’re glad to share these 8 bedtime prayers to bless you and the child you love:
1) A Prayer for the Blessing of Sleep
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety. – Psalm 4:8
Lord God,
When my child is overwhelmed by their day, they struggle to sleep. Their problems seem bigger in the dark. It’s hard to settle their thoughts. Tense and restless, they toss and turn on their pillow. They need your peace to wash away the stress and ease them into sleep.
Quiet my child’s spirit with assurance of your faithful love. Help them to lay down the burden of their troubles and concerns. Turn their thoughts to your good gifts–the caring relationships and simple joys you weave into their lives. Soothe any fears with confidence that you never slumber or sleep, and you’re watching over them every moment. Let them rise refreshed and eager to experience what you hold in store for their day.
Amen.

2) A Prayer for the Blessing of Friendship
The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. – Deuteronomy 31:8
Father,
At times we can feel alone in this world. We say goodbye to close friends and family who move away. We change jobs, homes, and schools and feel like strangers in unfamiliar places. Relationships grow apart, or we feel ignored or overlooked by those around us. We may even suffer hurt or rejection by those we thought we could trust.
You know the ache of my child’s loneliness tonight. Kids might act friendly at the lunch table but forget my child once the school day is over. Nobody extends an invitation, a message, or a call that would say “I’m thinking of you.” They feel invisible and insecure, wondering if they’ll ever belong. My child needs hope that you see their heart’s need and will bring a special friend in your perfect time.
Give my child courage to reach out to those around them. Keep them open, giving, and kind. Bless them with the gift of friendship. And as they wait, may they know you as their closest friend who never leaves their side.
Amen.
3) A Prayer for the Blessing of Confidence
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” – Joshua 1:9
Lord,
Over and over, my child will take steps onto unfamiliar ground. They’ll be the new kid in class or on the team. Try-outs, games, and performances will test their nerves as their skills are displayed for all to see. From final exams to sleepover camp, doctor appointments to driver’s ed, their courage will be put to the test.
Help my child to face each challenge with confidence by knowing you as their refuge and strength. Guard their heart and mind from the lie that their worth is something to be earned. Enable them to feel your presence that holds them close wherever they go. Ease their fears and fill them with excitement for what’s ahead. When they meet resistance, criticism, or obstacles in their way, build their faith to trust in your care. Fill them with peace as they rest in your faithful love.
Amen.

4) A Prayer for the Blessing of Safety
The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore. – Psalm 121:7-8
Father God,
The world is a scary place. Fear of the unknown can overwhelm our hearts. We wonder What if we’re struck by sickness or injury? What if someone tries to hurt us or take what’s ours? What if we make a mistake that sets us back? What if we lose something important? What if our friends walk away and we’re left on our own? What if we do our best but it’s just not enough? Our imaginations run wild with so many what-ifs that anxiety steals our joy, peace, and hope for tomorrow.
Replace our fear with trust tonight, Give us faith to believe that your love will never let us go. Help us to hold on to your promises in your Word that you hold all strength, wisdom, and power to overcome. Be our Protector both day and night. Guard us from harm. Shield us from evil. Shelter us in peace. Be our safety, our comfort, and our confidence each day. Thank you for your love.
Amen.
5) A Prayer for the Blessing of Closeness
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. – Colossians 3:12
Lord,
Our family is always on the go. The days are full. It seems more and more difficult to find quiet moments to simply be. We get so caught up in our schedule and responsibilities that quality time falls to the bottom of the list. Our hearts are craving spontaneous laughter. Undivided attention. Deep and open conversation. The feeling of being seen and known. We need you, Lord, to draw us close to one another again.
Show us how to simplify our days so there’s room to connect. Spark creativity for ways to make memories as a family. Slow us down so we listen well and hold one another’s emotions with care. Teach us how to make each other feel important as the most special people in our world. May we generous with our time, caring with our actions, and loving with our words every day. May the love in our home show the love of Jesus to everyone.
Amen.
6) A Prayer for the Blessing of Faith
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” – John 11:25-26
Lord,
The world will tell my child that your Word was just a story. That the Christian life is just a list of rules and limits. That all roads lead to heaven, if there’s even a heaven at all. That the way to happiness is following your heart and doing whatever you like. Yet you are the true source of life and love, truth and joy that are better than anything. I pray that my child will believe in Jesus and love you with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength forever.
Help my child to know you are real. Open their eyes to see your goodness in their life. Make your Word come alive so they can understand it and live by what it says. When they go through hard times, let them know you as their Helper and the One who comforts their heart. May my child not just know about you, but know you as their Savior, Lord, and Friend. Build their faith as they live in your love every day.
Amen.

7) A Prayer for the Blessing of a Generous Heart
Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. – 2 Corinthians 9:7
Lord God,
You lavish your love upon us in a thousand ways every day. You keep us safe and make sure we have what we need. You hold our family together so we never have to face this life alone. You’ve given us fun memories, special friends, and too many blessings to count. Because of you, we know what generous kindness really is.
Give my child a generous spirit like yours. Show them the joy that’s found in helping, sharing, and bringing joy to others. Awaken a fresh gratitude for your gifts in their life so they never take your love for granted. As a family, lead us to places we can serve. Grow our compassion for those who struggle. Open our hands so we give with gladness. May we love with humble, open hearts like Jesus.
Amen.
8) A Prayer for the Blessing of Wisdom
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. – James 1:5
Lord,
As my child walks the long path to adulthood, they’ll reach many crossroads along the way. Choosing friends, managing their time, pursuing goals and interests, and discerning right from wrong can leave them stuck in confusion. They need you to guide them each step of the way.
Help my child to know you as their Source of wisdom and help. Give them faith to trust that you know what’s best. Keep them humble so they welcome advice from those with more insight and experience. When they’re searching for answers, fill them with patient trust that you’ll give them what they need. Use times of questions or confusion to draw them to you in prayer.
Give me wisdom as a parent, too, to know when to step in and when to give my child space. Use my words to offer encouragement, clarity, and love. Let us commit our way to you as we surrender to your perfect leading.
Amen.
