3 Fun Activities to Help Dads and Daughters Connect
The relationship between a dad and his daughter is like no other. Countless studies show how significant the father-daughter bond can be for his girl’s emotional and spiritual well-being.
When God blessed Joanna and I with three daughters, we were overjoyed! I was determined to be the best dad I could be. But I’ll be honest—I didn’t always feel fully equipped for the job. Growing up in a house full of boys, the world of girlhood felt like alien territory. So as a parent, I often felt unsure of how to connect with my daughters on a deeper level and show them how special they really are.
Dads, can you relate? If so, you might be looking for fun, meaningful ways to show your daughter how much she means to you—and as we approach Valentine’s Day, it’s the perfect time to make special memories together.
We’ve learned that, when it comes to spending time with our daughters, it can be challenging to make it happen AND to make the time meaningful. That’s why we wrote 88 Great Daddy-Daughter Dates and 88 Great Conversation Starters for Dads & Daughters. These resources are full of fun ways to connect with your daughter and get to know her better!
Before we jump into the activities, I’d like to share a personal story with you. This May, my youngest daughter and I will be embarking on our dream trip to Scotland! We’ve been planning it for months, and I know we’re going to have an unforgettable time.
In addition to my excitement, I feel incredibly grateful. Not every dad gets the privilege of sharing such a close bond with his young adult daughter. And when I think about what laid the groundwork for the connection we share today, I know that the time we spent together—doing simple, intentional daddy-daughter activities when she was young—played a huge role. That’s why this topic has been on my heart lately.
While these activities were originally designed for dads and daughters, they can also be used by grandparents, moms, mentors, and more! You may even consider doing these activities with your son—every child craves connection with the adults they love.
Here are three of my favorite activities I use to bond with my daughters:
1) Flip a Coin
Items Needed: A Coin, your daughter’s favorite “road music,” digital timer, car keys, and money.
Get in the car with your daughter and start the music. If she asks where you’re going, well, you have no idea! As you start driving down your street ask your daughter to flip the coin. If the coin lands on heads, take the next right turn. If the coin lands on tails, take the next left turn.
Set your timer for three minutes. When the timer goes off, have your daughter flip the coin again. If it lands on heads, take another right turn; tails mean another left. Repeat this every three minutes for about half an hour.
Don’t worry about where you are going or if you end up driving in circles–that’s part of the fun! Focus on using the time to chat about life: her week at school, plans for your next family vacation, or funny stories you can share about work or school. If you find yourself getting stuck, reach for our 88 Great Conversation Starters for Dads & Daughters.
At the end of the half-hour, see where you have arrived! Find the nearest place around to stop for a soda, ice cream, or even to take her to buy something small.
Go Deeper:
Take the time to ask your daughter these questions ⤵-Did it make you feel stressed out when you didn’t know where you were going?
-Did you feel relaxed because you knew your dad was in the driver’s seat?
-Was it hard to sit back and enjoy the ride instead of just focusing on the destination?
-Have you ever felt worried because you didn’t know how a situation would turn out?
-Was it ever hard to make a decision because you didn’t know what the outcome would be?
2) There’s No One Like You
Items Needed: Old magazines, computer, printer, scissors, glue sticks, poster board, and markers.
Today, you are going to create your own work of art to celebrate that your daughter is a unique masterpiece, created by God!
Use your computer’s word processing software to spell out “All About (your daughter’s name).” Have your daughter choose her favorite font and color for the lettering. Print and cut out the title you’ve made and glue it across the top of the poster board.
Page through old magazines or search the internet together to find pictures of your daughter’s interests and favorite things: sports, colors, foods, stores, movies, animals, fashions, etc. Cut out or print the pictures and glue them onto the poster board.
When you’re finished cutting and pasting, use markers to embellish the poster. Write down words that describe the qualities of your daughter’s heart and personality (funny, helpful, generous, friendly, confident, honest, etc.). Find a place on your daughter’s bedroom door or wall to display the poster, to celebrate what a unique and special girl she is.
Go Deeper:
Take some time to study the finished poster together. Ask specific questions about the pictures she chose, such as, “What do you like best about that animal?” or “What was your favorite part of that movie?” This is a great opportunity to get to know her better.
3) Silly Socks
Items Needed: Money, car keys, a small notebook, and a pencil.
Make your way to a mall or shopping center. Your goal: get the silliest, wackiest pair of socks for each of you that you can find! Take your time browsing through the stores. Let your daughter make note of the wildest pair of socks in each store, so at the end of your browsing you can go back to purchase your favorites. Don’t forget to enjoy a snack at the food court before you leave!
Once you’ve made your purchases, head home to put on your silly socks. They can be your secret sign to each other. Whenever you see your daughter’s socks or she sees yours, it means, “I’m crazy about you!”
Go Deeper:
Sometimes life is just too serious. Our to-do lists never end, the phone doesn’t stop ringing, and the nightly reports bring a daily dose of bad news. We need a break from time to time to leave our worries behind and get silly together.
It’s so important to take time to invest in your daughter on a regular basis. If you find it challenging to plan outings, I encourage you to opt for activities that are 1) Entertaining for both of you and 2) Spiritually significant. It’s not about forcing yourself to like shopping malls or praying that she’ll develop a passion for football. Instead, it’s about creating a space where you can hear how she’s doing and listen as she opens up. Those special moments of quality bonding time will let her know that she can always turn to you for advice, love, and support.
When you spend intentional time with your daughter (or son!), what you are actually communicating is: “You are important. You deserve my time and attention.” And what message could be more beautiful and affirming than that?
As my daughter and I prepare for our upcoming trip, it warms my heart to know that the quality time we spent together when she was young paved the way for the special memories we’re creating now.
